PUTRAJAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (JERIT) want the Education Ministry to explain why school workers have not been receiving salaries according to the figure fixed in the minimum wage scheme.
Today representatives from PSM and JERIT staged a protest to highlight the issue in front of the Education Ministry, in Putrajaya.
The NGOs said they conducted a survey recently which showed that contractors from 14 out of 16 schools in Kajang and Semenyih have not been implementing the scheme which has fixed the minimum wage of RM900 a month for Peninsular Malaysia.
In Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan the minimum wage is RM800 a month.
"There are still many reports saying that some of the school workers such as cleaners and security guards are still earning salaries between RM650 and RM850 from the contractor," said JERIT's worker coalition coordinator Sivaranjani Manickam.
In an immediate response, the ministry's head of the media section Ab Kahar Harun said the NGOs should forward their complaints to the Human Resource Ministry.
"We cannot force the contractors to pay the workers salary, as it is not within our jurisdiction and they should have pointed out this matter to the Human Resource Ministry," he said.
"We honour the minimum wage scheme and have paid the contractors for their services. If the contractors paid the worker RM850 a month, we will add another RM50. All the money has been transferred to the respective state to be given to the contractors based on their invoices," said Kahar.
Education Ministry flayed for no minimum wage (Malaysiakini)

Several NGOs today staged a brief protest in front of the Education Ministry, demanding to know why cleaners and security guards at some schools were not being paid the minimum wage.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit) said in a survey they conducted in 16 schools, 14 have contractors who were paying their workers as low as RM650 a month.

"If the government cannot even ensure that these workers are paid according to the minimum wage, how will it control smaller establishments?

"Keep your house in order and implement the proposed minimum wage of RM900 a month," PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan (right) said.

Jerit’s workers unit coordinator Sivaranjani Manikam told reporters that workers were afraid to come forward as they fear being sacked by their employers, who are contractors to the ministry.

The NGOs also claimed that most of the workers' EPF and Socso contributions are also not paid.

KENYATAAN AKHBAR 11/9/2014

YAB Perdana Menteri : CUKAI GST PASTI  MEMBEBANKAN RAKYAT BIASA !
