UMSKAL Students Protest Over Slow Action On Water Supply |
|
Saturday, 20 March 2010 |
|
LABUAN, March 2 (Bernama) -- As the current dry spell has worsened water woes in Labuan, more than 1,000 students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) on Tuesday staged a protest, urging the authorities to find a quick solution to their misery.
The picket was the first in the history of the international offshore island of Labuan which has been affected by a shortage of water supply since the middle of last year.
Armed with placards and posters, they gathered at the university campus about 14km from Labuan town as early as 9am, and demanded for water as the police were on standby.
During the noisy picket, lectures were temporarily halted.
Speaking to Bernama, UMSKAL student representatives council vice-president Heryanto Hasanudin said they had submitted a memorandum to the university's student affairs department before the picket.
According to the memorandum, the students want Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khalid Nordin to visit UMSKAL and check the situation first-hand; a consistent and clean water supply and temporary closure of the university until the water woes are solved. |

|
Saturday, 20 March 2010 |
|
British Airways cabin crew have started a three-day strike that is set cause severe disruption for thousands of passengers. The BBC's Chris Rogers was on a BA flight from Heathrow to Amsterdam on Saturday morning. Some BA cabin crew have decided to work - but many will not |
Terminal 5 was teeming with stewards acting as guides for thousands of BA staff who have volunteered to replace striking cabin crew, the stewards were there to guide them though their first day on the job. The airline has assured passengers the volunteers have been fully trained for the job. I was a passenger on one of just a few scheduled flights with BA cabin crew who did turn up for work. The three-man team told me they decided to cross the picket line and were allocated on the flight to Amsterdam. One worker - who didn't wished to be named - said he may regret it "but he and other colleagues were thinking about the long term effects the strike would have on the company". |

Rosnah Supports NUBE's Call For 90 Day Maternity Leave |
|
Sunday, 14 March 2010 |
KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 (Bernama) -- Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin is all for the National Union of Bank Employees' (NUBE) call for the government to increase the maternity leave from 60 days to 90 days
She said the ministry would discuss with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to pursue the matter.
"Indeed, there are constraints on the part of the employer if it is implemented, but they (employers) have to look at it from the positive side.
"This is because if the maternity leave is extended, they are actually encouraging mothers to breastfeed their babies," she told reporters after opening the "Say Yes To Breastfeeding" charity dinner here Saturday night.

By Marc Jitab A roundtable discussion on the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, which will go into its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat next week, raised continuing concern that it was introduced without proper consultations with stakeholders. The Bill is expected to be passed and implemented in the middle of 2011. Organised by the Selangor government, the discussion was chaired by Klang MP Charles Santiago with MTUC president Syed Shahrir Syed Mohamud, PAS treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli and Klang municipal councillor Robert Choo Teck Keong on the panel. Representatives from think-tanks, the business community, academia, consumer associations, tax consultants, politicians and private individuals also took part in the discussions. |

FMM Says Malaysia Not Ready For GST, Suggests Retail Sales Tax |
|
Friday, 12 March 2010 |
|
Source: Bernama KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) -- The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) on Tuesday suggested that the government consider a Retail Sales Tax (RST) as Malaysia was not ready for the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Chairman of the Task Force on GST Datuk Lee Ow Kim recommended that the GST be deferred until Malaysia was ready when average income was higher and the income disparity was smaller.
The GST is supposed to replace the current Sales and Services Tax (SST) by the middle of next year.
Lee said normally the GST was for more advanced and affluent countries where the income disparity was not that big and most people were paying income tax.
"Hence, the government should consider the RST as an alternative which was simpler, less costly for government and businesses to administer but generates the same revenue to the government," he told a GST conference on Tuesday. |
