PRESS STATEMENT 08/12/2008 JERIT BICYCLE CAMPAIGN RECEIVES TREMENDOUS SUPPORT FROM THE PUBLIC6 Days JERIT's BICYCLE CAMPAIGN has been moving from state to state. In the northern side, the JERIT team have covered, Kedah and Penang and are moving into Perak to continue the campaign. In the Southern region , after massive attempts for the police to block the cyclists, they campaign is going on smoothly with good support of the local people. JERIT's bicycle campaign is mainly to public create awareness for the public especially on current issues such as economic crisis, workers' rights, draconian laws and environmental awareness.
Currently, the campaign is receiving massive response from the public. Our leaflets, badges, and T-shirts have finished and we have to reprint all of it again. As we leaflet and do signature campaign , the support shown by the public is very good. There are also invitations from various people and groups for us to visit their towns and villages and everywhere the cyclists goes they are being received well and refreshments are provided by the locals for the cyclists. The cyclists are also in high spirits and they want to continue the programme. Accusations such as they are not trained or medically unfit is unfounded as medical screening was done for the cyclists and this is just casual cycling and the cyclists are enthusiastic to continue. However, we decided to scale down the programmes, thus we will only be visiting major towns and cities in each state. So, the police statement that the public are not happy with the programme is a statement without basis. This statement is a clear attempt by the police to stop JERIT from continuing with the campaign. The support of the 4 Chief Ministers in Kedah, Penang, Perak, and Selangor plus the support of the various ADUN's and Member of Parliaments shows that this campaign represents the people's aspiration. Thus, JERIT will be continuing with the campaign as the people's are with us and want us to continue the campaign. Statement released by JERIT Secretariat |
